WFL Buddy Rich Jazz Festival Snare

Copy of deleted post.

Any information regarding the above listed drum, it's value, etc. is greatly appreciated.

WFL Buddy Rich Jazz Fest . . . . Help with identifying this snare. Not sure if this is the correct designation. Is the Super Classic Strainer a less desirable/workable design? Can anyone please explain the extra hole.

Never had a Mahogany shelled snare. Wondering if these tune up high enough for a crisp attack, or are they very dark,"throaty" sounding (for lack of better description). Are these good sounding, all purpose snares, or more of a special brand of sound?

Finally, given all the issues, the non original parts (strainer, top hoop, xtra hole in drum ) is this a fair price, given I would most likely have to source factory original replacement parts. Also, how easy or difficult is it to find correct parts for these WFL's?

Any help appreciated,

thanks ,

Max

No one 'round here interested in Buddy Rich??? Come on fellas,

I could use some shared info, please. In a timely manner, because it's a running auction . . . . unless one of you snags it from under me; spare me the coin. : )

Hey, hey...give us more than 6 hrs., here...we are a bunch of old coots... Hurting

It is a pretty GOOD price...at first I was kinda shocked it hadn't been snatched up.

I'd imagine the only thing keeping folks from hitting the button is that someone driilled a second venthole and the top hoop is unoriginal. Thus, not a "factory" vintage snare.

If seller had the BIN at $20 less, it'd be gone fer' sure.

Nevertheless....it'll get pretty snappy if you tune it high. Remember it's a thin-shell with broad re-ring edges, so it is always going to have "woodiness" to the sound, and a lotta resonance. That's where the muffler and a heavy sorta coated head (Powerstroke 3 coated or maybe an Evans EC) comes in...to dry it out a bit....

Hello Max!...

Well I have to say that I am a HUGE BR fan... and as such have quite a collection of all things Buddy including, but certainly not limited to: ALL the snare drums that he played between the years of 1949 to 1979, with each drum being CORRECT to year/model/wrap, etc. With that said, THIS is the correct snare drum that Buddy played during this particular WFL/Ludwig endorsement period. ( check attachment ) Because of that, I tend to discount drums that weren't in his wrap or have the proper hardware on them, and that would be the case on the drum you're looking at. But that's just me coming from a BR "purist" POV. So in addition to what Jaye has mentioned...

The drum isn't really a BR model, so that coupled with a few extra holes, wrong throw, butt, etc. is probably the reason. I will say that you are dialed in correctly on the "sound" of the WFL/Ludwig 3 ply shells though... they are indeed a bit darker and "throaty" to use your term... however... they are still quite articulate with excellent response and sensitivity. The 3 ply w/rings shell does automatically put the fundamental in a lower area though, and tensioning/tuning a lot above that just chokes the drum. Head choice and tension is of course quite personal... but with the make-up of this shell, the drum is quite dry to begin with. I use a Ludwig WeatherMaster medium weight coated white on mine and the drum sounds quite impressive, and as mentioned, very articulate. Hope this was of help!

Good stuff, guys! Thank you.

Tommy, WoW! That's a beauty! Sounds like you most definitely have a very cool collection, with lots of interesting history there!

The super classic strainer looks very archetypal '50's/modern design . . . . . Where's my Coca-Cola !
