1957 Ludwig WFL Snare Model? Worth? Restoring? Help!

Loading...

I just got this drum from someone who had it stored in an attic for like 30 years. It has obviously been painted at some point a sticker was also put on top of that.

I noticed that it has 6 lugs, and from searching the web, some of the snares from that time have 6, some have 8. Can someone please help me identify the exact model? How much is it worth?

What would I need to do to restore it? I'm not as much worried about the inside as I am the outside, and I just wanna make it look decent, not necessarily "original specs" or show piece.

welcome. great find on that drum. got any pics? what is the depth measuring just the shell? those are some fine drums from that era and will be well worth restoring. you have come to the right place.

Got pics now. I didn't measure, but looks like 14x5, maybe 5 1/2. I took the bottom head off when I looked inside, finding the date stamp. So the other hoop, etc. are there, just not on the pics.

Nice drum. The model is "Pioneer".Its a great sounding drum.I would just clean it up put new heads and snare wire's on it and play it..The only thing i see Wrong is the strainer its the Wrong one and not even a Ludwig-W.F.L.- its a made in Japan Pearl strainer...Mikey

agreed with what mikey said.

the only thing else i see is a concern with the muffler. baseball bat mufflers didnt come out until the early 60's after this drum was made. most of the drums from this era had no mufflers. also, the round knob mufflers and the baseball bat mufflers use two holes. i only see one here.

I think that baseball bat muffler might not be Ludwig. The base looks too small and there it does not have the mounting screw. Also the arm looks angled and the ball looks too big. Star made one that looked very much like Ludwig's for a while.

Here is one in a '66 Star catalog. Note that it doesn't use the mounting screw like the Ludwig.

Looks like your strainer too.

Yep, I have it for sale on Houston cl, now for $275. Strange that the strainer isn't original, I wouldn't think ppl those days were changing out things like that...Oh, and thin shell, I'm convinced that the snare throwoff and muffler are the ones u mentioned. Exact match.
