MIJ Slingerland Stencil Micro Kit

So...I picked up a MIJ Slingerland stencil 12" rack tom and 16x16" floor tom and decided to make a micro kit out of it. Using 60's Ludwig bass spurs in the existing leg mounts...a Gibraltar bass drum riser...a Slingerland cymbal arm in the 3rd leg mount...adding a MIJ rail consolette and an additional floor tom leg mount and cymbal arm for the ride...then matching it up with my early 60's Slingerland aluminum snare, here it is! This was a fun little project and works great when I need to take a kit to my bass players garage for rehearsal.

Thanks, Steve. Oh yeah...forgot to mention that I did a rewrap job on it...but it's just a thin sparkle wrap that goes on right over the original wrap. It comes in a roll and you just peel it off and stick it on. It's not the most durable stuff in the world and would never use it on a gigging kit, but for this purpose it works great! When I got the shells...one of them was wrapped and the other was bare wood, so I did the quick and easy job for them to match.

Wow, the chrome looks great! Any secrets?

What heads did you use? That 16" must be kind of boomy as a bass...

Hey cn679...I used a coated Remo Emperor on the resonant side and a clear Remo Powerstroke 3 for the batter head...it actually sounds pretty damn good if I may say so myself. The internal muffling ring on the Powerstroke 3 makes a huge difference. As for the chrome...it wasn't too bad when I got it, so I just used a little chrome polish. For other projects to get the real tough rust off, I have used Simple Green and a broken-in green scouring pad. I hate cleaning t-rods though....ugh!

Thanks everyone! I couldn't have thought of a better way to use 2 orphan toms...so now they serve a purpose! I'm thinking under low volume situations, I should be able to use this baby live!

That's what I call a "CoffeeHouse Re-Creation"! Those are sweet. I have done a few of these this way and people love the utility they offer because they can be used in small, tight engagements.

BTW, I get 200-250 for them....

When I do these, I do them as 16-10-13, or whatever I have, and they make great small venue kits.
