1966 Ludwig kit... Please help me identify model

Loading...

Yesterday I picked up this kit on a whim. I'm a long time guitar player, fairly new to drums. Anyway these came up for sale and the price was right so I grabbed them. They are stamped 1966 inside. Based on the sizes I'm thinking it's a super classic set that has had the hollywood mounting system added after. Any help identifying them, getting a rough idea of what they are worth would be greatly appreciated.

I know you are asking about the Ludwig drums, but I am a Slingerland guy :) - anyway, looks like that snare is either a student model or a Hollywood Ace (its a little tough to see the throw off and number of lugs from the picture). If 6 lugs then you would have a student model snare, if 8 lugs and a rapid strainer then you would likely have a 3 ply drum with mahogany interior - the Hollywood Ace. Either way - great find! The snare alone is worth more than what you paid.

It used to be a Ludwig Super Classic in Black Diamond Pearl finish

Ok thanks for the info. But what do you mean by "used" to be a super classic? Also I revived a PM offering to sell me the "correct" tom for the kit but based on the 1964 catalog I've got all of the correct shell sizes.

The tom mount is some sort of newfangled equipment, not original Ludwig mount. As for price, you done real good, son....

And it is missing the original snare, whether Super Classic, JazzFest or Supra, (which I don't think was available at the time), you are also missing the cymbal arm. Great score, though!

Your kit used to be a Super Classic when it had its original rail consolette in place, Subsequently, someone removed it and replaced it with some Asian-made imported hardware. Also, the cymbal mount is not in the correct position on the bass drum shell. So, it's not a real Super Classic anymore. It's a modified/altered set. I suppose you could still call it an altered Super Classic shell pack

The offer you received was likely someone assuming that the kit was a Hollywood kit (which has two mounted toms) and was offering to sell you the "other" tom tom. But it's a moot point because it isn't a Hollywood kit.

DEFINITELY a GREAT price!! As a player's set, it will serve you very, VERY well, for that kind of money. Burger Kin

So let me get this straight. Is it the bass cymbal mount that makes it a super classic?
