My every day kit is a 13, 16, 20
I like the smaller BD and I used that kit to teach my daughter. I am not very tall and have "short" arms, the 20 lowers the kit a little and helps me with my reach. The smaller BD was great for teaching my daughter on also. I also have a 13, 16, 20 that the tom does not need much more heavy hitting to get a nice response. I have kits with 22, and 24" BDs that I play but I prefer the 20"
I think it is up to what kit fits your body, and playing style. Which ever one your comfortable sitting behind. If there is a concern with level of sound and projection when playing out, microphones are the answer.
