Default Winkler three headed cocktail drum

I have been helping Tommy Winkler of Nashville clean out his workshop and bought three cocktail drums that he made in 2003 under his TW brand. He exhibited them at the 2003 Percussive Arts Society convention. Two of the drums are fourteen inches in diameter by twenty four inches tall. The fourth drum made was delivered to Steve Ferrone. Tommy explained that the normal two headed cocktail drum was being used for the “unplugged” acoustic style but Mr. Ferrone was not happy about the sound. Tommy made a three headed cocktail drum by having a five inch deep molded plastic funnel shape to suspend from the top rim with a smaller head diameter snare head mechanism suspended in the shell. The plastic strap for the snare strainer exits through a small hole. The shell has two plywood baffles and three pairs of vent holes. The fourteen inch drums have a ten inch snare head. One of the drums was sixteen inches in diameter and I assume had a fourteen inch snare head. The sixteen inch drum was purchased by a local blues drummer, Ardie Dean. The distance from the top of the drum to the snare baffle is ten inches. The two maker’s plates read “TW Cocktail drums Hand Made by: TW Drum company Nashville – USA”. The bottom “bass drum” head is a two ply head with a Remo foam muffler and the snare side sounds best to me with a high tuning similar to a piccolo snare but that may be the result of the single ply coated head. I think this is a very interesting design and wanted to share it with the forum. As far as I know no tom toms or other accessories were made for these drums.
