I rewrapped a clubdate 12" tom and left the original silver sparkle in there. Clamped a metal t square to the shell, cut it evenly and started the new wrap there.
I've seen plenty of home stained ludwigs that have a huge gap in the joint from people digging the wrap out. Two things drums don't come back from are prolonged exposure to fire or water!
