I'm thinking about picking up this Ludwig kit. It has the concert toms, but I'm mainly interested in the the kick. The rack toms are 14,15 with the pointy blue/olive badges, the 16 is a larger keystone badge and the 24 kick has the rounded blue/olive badge. The seller is asking for $400, but will take $300. This would be a project kit, I'm thinking I'd take lugs from the15 and put on the bottom of the 14, then buy lugs for bottom of the 16. I doubt drilling extra holes in those concert toms would effect the value. But, I may just leave it as is and just run the 14,16,24.
What do you guys think? |

It looks like the rack toms have rings, I think the floor and kick have the 6ply shells.

If you play those as they are, all you'll get is thunder. 14,16,24 is kaboom all the time and if you start drilling and changing the few of us concert tom players can kiss some more chances to get them goodbye. I have a resonate side FT (orininal) and recommend both BD and FT be that way because it breaks up the tone.

I don't know what it was about concert toms back in the day...I loved the look of them. I loved Carl Palmer's stainless steel kit and a lot (if not most) of the popular drummers of that era were removing the bottom heads. In fact, there was a product called Dead Ringers that looked like a kind of thick, gray plastic weather stripping material that you could put in place of the bottom head and still retain the bottom rim, intact. They didn't work very well...I should know....I bought some! HA!
But there was something about seeing into the bottom of the drums from the audience perspective...I just liked it. I thought it made the drums look like canons or something. Then when Octobans came out, I wanted a set of them....never got any, though. But now I'm totally over the concert tom thing....other than the catalogue pic of the original OctoPlus configuration! ![]()
