V - go back + watch the Chris Dave video (u might have missed it).

You know, it's been years since I've even sat w/ other players, longer since working on original material. Some of this percussion &@@% that you hear/see seems so obvious, so intuitive - the songs that we all know (not the more obscure artists) - until you stop and strip what you hear free from the guitar, bass and vocals. It's impossible to do. But imagine that was you in that famous band. What would you have done as the drummer?

And then you consider what the likes of a Colaiuta, a Katche, a Dave does and, yes, V, these guys operate on a different wavelength on a different plane.

is another great drummer/vocalist, and i can clearly see an influence on Tommy Lee, they way he sits at the kit, posture, and the way he plays.
Also gotta love that Mach Ludwig kit in red sparkle he played

A criminally underrated drummer (Phillip Fisher) and band from one of the best albums of the 90's. I know it's off topic slightly, but listen to the beat he plays during the chorus (around 1:25). A clinic in making a funk/hip-hop beat feel great:

Fishbone - So Many Millions - YouTube

And the last two are just magnificent by Vinnie:

The Hounds Of Winter - Sting - YouTube

and.....this whole song is basically a solo for Vinnie:

Allan Holdsworth - Spokes - YouTube
Great stuff ! The Hounds of Winter from Sting was my favorite track off that album, among others, which my band played in the early 2000's cause my at that time was such a huge Sting fan. Vinnie is probably my favorite contemporary drummer of all time, simply because of the vastness of his playing. He can sit in on any session. Thanks for posting because now i'm gonna play it a few hundred times for the next few months and reminisce !

There are also a million short drum fill intros on classic 70's reggae tracks that are a source of inspiration for me, especially Sly Dunbar.
Very cool stuff there Funkypoodle ! Just like you, i love funk drumming.
Chambers is beast, and i think he's only using one kick drum, as i've never
known him to use 2, but i may be wrong. Copeland is a master at fusing reggae
with prog and straight rock too ! Love all this stuff !

cheers,
Rob

Great tunes gentlemen ! I'm also learning quite a bit, reminiscing, finding out new things about all these great drummers, and just simply enjoying the tunes and the skills these drummers brought and showed us with their immense talent. Keep them coming guys !Oh, and i know i'm cheating on my own thread, but i thought i'd throw this one in as well. Hopefully a "certain someone" will see it ! Thank you very much Mr. Carlos, for giving me the real first drumming intro i've ever learned perfectly from beginning to end, and every drum fill at the end ! FUN, FUN, FUN TIMES BROTHERS !!!
P.S. Tell me that's not THE most bad@55 bass guitar sound at the end ??!!??

One more. The classic funk groove, performed by none other than Stevie Wonder himself.
