We used to repair rivets on restaurant cookwarethe same way.... I did not want to suggest it, since I had never tried it on drum hardware before.
If you stick around here long enough, a solution will come forth from a member with experience solving most any problem that someone needs help with. It's amazing. Glad your repair went well.
