Cool Sabian AA Flat Hats Info
Hey all,

I just bought a pair of Sabian AA Flat Hats for almost next to nothing...There are no flea bites or cracks anywhere...There is some paint spatter on the top hat from someone painting the room around them and using no drop cloths...

I`m really liking the sound of them...They are very responsive with a very definitive "chick" which comes from the holes in the bottom cymbal...

Sorry for the crappy pic...I can take better pics if anyone is interested...I just wanted to capture the ink stamp on the top to see if anyone could identify the era...

What era are these hats? I`m thinking 90`s, but, I`m not sure...The 80`s version has the hollow ink stamp on the underside I do believe...

Cheers

Could be very late 90's. These were Sabian's answer to Zildjian Quick Beats.

It's almost the other way around. The patent for these was applied for on Jan 31, 1979 granted (4248129) Feb 3, 1981 with Robert Zildjian of Meductic Canada as the inventor, and Avedis Zildjian Co as the assignee.

They weren't called Quick Beats at first. That came later as a registered trademark after the Sabian split. So in one sense the model name Quick Beat is Zildjians answer to Sabian.

I'm sure I have a pre Quick Beat ad lurking in my collection somewhere. If I find it I'll add it in.

What do you look for to distinguish a 90s Sabian AA cymbal from a post 2K Sabian AA cymbal? I've paid more attention to the changing HH ink styles and I haven't yet got those sorted out. There seem to be fashion changes back and forth between "HH" and "Hand Hammered" (with and without italics). But what does one look for in the AA side of the family? Is it similarly complicated? If I know what to consider with AA that can help guide my squirreling away of images for some time in the future when I attempt a timeline.

Cool Re: Sabian AA Flat Hats Info
I messaged Sabian regarding these and this was their reply:

The Flat Hats have been in production since 1982. We still make them but you will not find them in the catalog. These have consist of a medium heavy top over a heavy flat bottom. The vent holes are drilled so that the cymbals don't airlock due to the extra weight of the top cymbal.

Cheers

Thanks for that info from Sabian. It's great to have the years line up like that. Almost makes me believe we're starting to understand the history properly.

Meanwhile, I haven't been able to relocate that early Zildjian ad I'm sure I saw. I might have saved it to my disk but not filed it properly in my indexing system. That means it could be lost for a time until I stumble across it looking for something else. Either that or I failed to save a copy at all in which case it might be quite some time before it comes to light again. It's not possible to search for it by looking for Quick Beat because that's a pair of words the ad doesn't have. Catch 22.
