Well, it's been a couple of weeks at least since I've posted...I wasn't going to say anything...

...and I'm sure there's several "I told you so's" I'm owed....

however, I'm finding out how difficult it is to veneer the interior of the drums. the main issue being the seam. You see wood veneer is very stiff...and I've not been using a softener prior to installing the interior ply of gumwood...and between splits and the waving of the edges at the seam...I'm losing my s**t... this is difficult...and my kingdom for a shell press!

Basically, I've went and shot about $75 worth of veneer learning the ins and outs of this process... I basically have to rip it back out and then sand free all of the Titebond III ...which, is gonna suck... (smile big guys...the rookie is gettin' a baptism by fire!) and basically buy more and start over...

So, now I'm kinda taking a break and I'm re-evaluating the veneer...I'm trying to decide if it's worth it...and for what it's worth, it is gorgeous...(sigh) I wonder if I shouldn't get veneer that has the grain running the other way...it is FAR easier to mold...

On a positive note, I got my estimate from Precision drum co...they'll not only cut my new bearing edges...they'll also install the black glass glitter wrap for me...for a penny or two...

Oh hey - you tried something adventurous and imaginative, coulda worked and you'da been a hero! Leave it to the always frustrating inanimate *things* not to cooperate!

I'm one of those who tried to steer you away from the interior laminate, and I'd never think of saying told you so. Instead I say keep up the interesting work, no doubt all are rooting for you, and you'll likely end up with some very nice shells.

Well,

Everything kinda got put on hold. Last semester of college and funding it straight out of pocket. So, they will get done...it's just gonna be a while.

Here's where they are now...

The veneering wound up going kinda horribly wrong. It would seem that unless you have a shell press (like...a real one) it is about impossible to get the veneer to sit flat and not wrinkle to death...the outside of the drum is one thing...as vacuum bags work wonderfully...the inside is another!

So, lately I've been slowly chipping out all of the glue and bad veneer...

My next course of action may just be to stain and lacquer the interiors of the drums. Veneer is just too pretty and expensive to ruin like this...and they still sound good...the veneer was mostly cosmetic...but not really practical...

So, lesson learned...but, I will be getting some things done on it...just might not be as fast as I had hoped!

Stay tuned...I'm still here!

Keep on chippin! Looking forward to your progress...

I've been fooling with the idea of covering a 20" MIJ BD shell with some birch veneer, very thin stuff. I don't have a vacuum bag, wondering if just tensioning it over the shell with tape at the overlap will work...veneer is available in sections much larger than required to cover a 20" BD, so may test on another shell.

Will also post with pics....if it works

Well, it's been years since I've posted on this...

Basically, there's more to the story...

Turns out, the only drum that wasn't out of round was the bass drum...I couldn't get the floor tom or rack tom to turn out...and the chipping...basically destroyed the rack tom...So, both were given a viking funeral...I nearly did the same with the bass drum and almost decided to give up on the whole thing...

...and then...well, the kid that sold this to me...he OD'ed on Heroin and wound up dead...so...now I feel like I can't give up...

I managed to find a 12" MIJ tom fer cheap on eBay. Now I just need to find a floor tom that's not ridicuous or waaaay over priced...

Gonna get back to this project...I'll try to post...
