Default Vintage Snare Stand as a Tom Holder

Hi All,

I have looked a little on the forum for a clear answer to this question, but can't seem to find one. My apologies if it is already out there...

I have a Ludwig Club Date kit that is missing the rail consolette, meaning I have no way to mount my ride tom. I am considering purchasing a vintage Ludwig snare stand to accomplish this, as I am not a fan of the consolette, and they tend to be rather pricey.

I had vintage flat based cymbal stands as a kid (they weren't very vintage back then lol), and they seemed to fall all the time. I am not sure if that was their curse or just my playing. I have the DW flat cymbal stands now. I would buy the DW flat snare stand but I don't really want to shell out $100 for one, plus I think a vintage Club Date is begging to use a vintage stand.

So after all of that...here is my question. Are they worth it? Will they hold up or just fall over, too? Are their any models or years that are better than others? I have seen some Ludwig Standard stands that are decently priced for vintage gear. I have seen some WFL and Keystone ones also, that are pretty cool. I am VERY new to vintage Ludwig stuff, as I am predominantly a Rogers guy, so I wasn't aware they classified their hardware the way they did their kits (i.e., Standard, Keystone, etc.).

So what do you guys think? Should I keep looking or just break down and feed the DW machine?

Any info is appreciated! (Sorry for the wordy post!)

Thanks for the info vintagemore2000. My hardware is chrome, so if I did go that route, I think I would stick to that. But I just don't think I want to deal with the consolette at all...and I don't mind the extra holes, for now. But I will keep that in mind, thanks!

My 13" RK sits in an old 60s Pearl snare stand and there's no stability issues whatsoever. Just make sure the basket isn't gripping the bottom hoop and glue/tape a little bit of foam onto the inside face of the plastic/rubber basket claws where the bottom hoop rests to stop the stand sucking out any resonance.

Awesome, thank you for the info Cam. I had a feeling it would be adequate, but you never know until you try. Like I said, I had some bad times and some damaged cymbals with my old flat based vintage cymbal stands, and I didn't want to go down that road with my Clubbies. I was also concerned about losing resonance, but mounting it off a cymbal stand is not an option, as I do not use a cymbal of any kind (except for my hats) on my left side.

Thanks again!
