Default *1929 SLINGERLAND 6.5 x 14 ROSE PEARL/ARTGOLD TONE FLANGE ARTIST MODEL

Hi,

Here’s a new snare drum that just entered the collection. I just got this one from an East Coast collector. Rose Pearl is one of my favorite finishes from the 1920s-30s.

*1929 SLINGERLAND 6.5 x 14 ROSE PEARL/ARTGOLD TONE FLANGE ARTIST MODEL

*Rob Cook’s Rebeats Color Book states that Rose Pearl was only around in 1929.

THE SHELL:
The Rose Pearl wrap was in great shape. There was a small repair that had been done at some point but it looked like a crack in the wrap that was expertly glued back to normal. I cleaned and polished the finish and was very happy with the outcome. The solid maple shell is in-round with no re-ring separation. The interior was a bit soiled so a little lemon oil spruced things up. The cloud badge is in good shape with a tight grommet. There is an artifact from yesteryear on the interior, a sticker from E. A. Sutphin Co. Musical Instruments Philadelphia.

THE HARDWARE:
The Artgold hardware was mostly there except for a few broken and a few incorrect collar hooks. This was an easy fix. The hardware needed some restoration because we all know (all together now) “rust never sleeps” -- and my new saying -- “tarnish doesn’t get any better if you just leave it like it is”. I stripped off the old lacquer, polished the original factory copper plating and re-gold lacquered the hardware. I did leave a little “ugly” on the hardware to keep it real looking. The result is Artgold hardware that is clean but looks its age. The Tone Flange is the aluminum version with holes and fits perfectly on the shell.

Bill Wanser expertly tucked the oversized top head and bottom head. Snappi-Snares rounded out this restoration.

As most of you know I like “sets” of drums so I’m *2/3 there...I’ve added a photo of my 5 x 14 Rose Pearl Tone Flange Artist Model (thank you Mark Cooper). I’ve also added a photo of my 5 x 14 (thanks Andy Weis) and 6.5 x 14 (thanks Joe Mekler) Rose Pearl Tone Flange DuAll Models.

*4 x 14 Tone Flange Artist Models are extremely rare, I know of only 3. I’d love to see photos of any others that may be out there.

Enjoy!

WOW! I love those! I've always wondered what these sounded like.....I know they won't sound modern, but, still....

Thanks for posting, Mike.

Gotta' love the Curotto Collection...
Not a bow-wow in the bunch after they get the MC treatment.

I mean....WHAT WAS the idea behind that Tone Flange apparatus? Mike, if you were to compare the effect of the sound of that drum compared to other non-tone-flanged drums of that era, what would you say the effect is on the overall sound? Is it more muted? Does it create more overtones? I'm curious as to what they were going for with this design...

The catalog blip says "more focused sound"...etc. The way I set my vintage drums up TF or no TF they all sound like 1920s-30s snare drums...correct sounding for the era...
