Default 1965 Ludwig Super Classic Kit 22/13/16

Hi all,

First post here. I'm trying to get a ballpark value to make sure this is as good of a deal as I think it is.

I'm purchasing a '65 Ludwig super classic kit in (definitely aged and gigged) silver sparkle. Shells only. 22/13/16. It's past ginger ale. It's more like an egg nog sparkle these days.

A friend and professional drum maker/collector found these for me to restore. He knew I wanted the kit and their sound and I didn't care about appearance. I'll be gigging with this kit.

The shells are in round, white interiors. 3 ply mahogany with re-rings. Bearing edges were rough, so they have been professionally recut by him. 45 degree with a roundover. One tom hoop is unoriginal, but chrome over steel like the mid-late 60's ludwig hoops. Stock rail consollete, stock bass drum-mounted cymbal arm, and stock legs on floor tom.

He cleaned all the shells, all wraps are without cracks and no lifting at the seams. He then put a thin layer of clear to protect after his cleaning.

T-tods and claws on bass hoops are unoriginal, but authentic ludwig. Bass drum has two extra holes where consolette mount was shifted towards center. That has been moved back and holes plugged with matching aged silver sparkle old stock wrap.

Hoops were originally painted all black, but were professionally cleaned with inlay removed. Repainted black and inlay put back in.

Matching keystone badges and serial numbers on all shells. 176XXX.

Pictures are attached. I wish I had more to show, but don't have the kit with me. I'm getting this kit for $550... What would you pay for these?

Any other thoughts welcome.

Thanks for your help!

I'd give him $550 right now! Don't even haggle with the price, that's a great looking kit.

I'm buying it and not haggling for sure. It sounds incredible. I'm just wondering how good of a bottle of liquor I need to get my man for finding this kit and shaping it up for me.

I haven't seen any 60's super classics (with matching shells) in any condition go below $700 as of late. What do the valuation gurus think?

They've already said so.

Not a kit I'd touch w/ recut edges, moved consolette, etc. ... but I'm not buying it : you are and you sound pumped to get it, to play it. Right? And you're buying from a friend who's taken care of everything for you = win win.

Bet a hug + a thank you would be all that's needed if he's your boyfriend.

Very nice for $500. If the shells are in good shape, how can you go wrong?

If all was original, including edges, and everything was in good shape, you'd be looking at probably $1200 on the low end. I think you're doing great at $550, especially since you intend to gig them.

Those look really nice. Growing up, that was the exact kit to have in my town, SS with a 22" A with rivets. Happy for you. Am curious what your friend coated them with; any idea?.....marko

Not sure on what kind of lacquer/clear he used. He knows his stuff though. I will try to ask him next time I see him.
