once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

I was sitting in the barbers' chair this morning and heard this on the radio. I was very surprised, having not been aware that he was ill. He was my age and so it hit home: Prepare for eternity, as it seems to be just around the corner.

At one time I had a picture of Neil with his early set of Rogers drums in steel grey ripple finish. That alone endeared him to me, though I was never much of a fan of Rush. I did very much appreciate his contribution to drumming. Seriously accomplished!

I agree that the rock life can be really tough, but unless I'm wrong, I don't think Neil led the typical rock & roll life. He was in a good long time marriage with his wife and daughter, both tragically lost, I don't think he did drugs or drank, and he was very grounded in this life, although adrift when it came to God, faith and the life to come.

My favorite memory of him was not with Rush, it was actually when he played with the Buddy Rich Orchestra. Definitely out of his genre and comfort zone, but he pretty much nailed it on a small kit which was good to see. Buddy would have been quite happy!

God rest your soul...

What I admired most about Neil Peart was his class and dedication. In every interview I've watched you can see what a classy, decent human being he was. And to play at his level, giving it 100% at every show for 45 years was incredible.

I did not grow up in the 80s. Whenever I would see youtube videos of Neil play, he literally had a frown on his face. So I was never a fan of his because he looked like he was not having any fun playing drums. I knew he had tendinitis, but I had no idea he had brain cancer. I guess he was just in pain. Man I feel like a douche.

I think you might have mistaken a miserable countenance with sheer concentration. Those solos of his were not something he ad-libbed. Don't feel too badly. What is important was his great talent he let us enjoy for too brief a time.

Yeah, Hell I couldn't believe it either when I heard it on the radio coming home from work one day. They kept it on the down low for three years . In 1981-82 I was with the band . LeStudio . As a crew helper . After that who was over the board of hiring people like me to actually getting to help out with the band them years. I didn't wont to leave. But it happen. I was off to helping another bands . NEIL will be missed . RUSH is over. Done .
