When they do close, some of those cymbals have keyholes, maybe we can pick the lock.

Dear all - I am posting .....in case you miss the posting announcement at top of the (ch) forum pages...

Effective 5/27/2019, the Cymbalholic.com forums will be closed indefinitely. Because of the demands of life, time, and energy, and other circumstances–as well as the cultural shifts of online communications/community building facilitated by social media–moving forward, we will be focusing our energy on re-purposing the value and service that Cymbalholic.com can be for the greater drumming community in the future.

Heartfelt thanks to our many members, our administrators and moderators over the years, and the industry as a whole for supporting the Cymbalholic forums since 2001. We hope that the Cymbalholic.com website can eventually serve as a resource in a new way moving forward.

***(PLEASE NOTE: Effective immediately, you will need to plan on resolving any marketplace transactions/communications by moving those to other off-site modes of communications; I.e.direct email or other means, as private messages and other forum-related communications will be unavailable. We will be unable to assist or accommodate communications.)

I was a regular and very active member of Cymbalholic for several years from almost the beginning, in those heady days when Drumaholic was teaching us about vintage stamps. Shortly after they did a major reworking of the site after being offline for quite a while, things seemed to change a bit and I started to lose interest. I haven't been a very active member for a number of years now, but a few times a year I do go back and take a peak. Still, the site was invaluable to drummers, and specially lovers of cymbals over the years. Sorry to hear that they're folding their tents, but I wish Patrice and Chad the best. If I recall correctly, you were one of the most active members of that site so the loss must be much greater for you.

Alright.

Firstly...

If you are not willing to stop and take in what I am offering with this explanation, then please refrain from initiating what will only be a monologue based upon your lack of patience and ability to comprehend what you’ve read. I apologize for the length.

A few of you know or remember when we launched in 2001.

2001.

A larger number of you recall the few times that we have either closed the site or forums for a period of time, and for various reasons, over the years of operation.

An even larger number of you know that as great as the forums/site/information is that is here currently, it is very much incomplete and nowhere near as expansive as it was during the peak usage years (around 04-06).

My wife, Patrice, and I were the two individuals who ran the place, built it, and dealt with all aspects of it for years. Later, around the time that we had a child, and also had to relocate AND make massive career shifts (and much more), the reality of dedicating the required time to the site indicated that it would have to end or we would have to have help maintaining things.

Maintaining things isn’t just one thing or one type of person.

You all can thank Patrice for this not ending years ago. It’s not that I don’t or didn’t love this community, it’s that to sustain what we had was impossible for the two of us. I jeopardized full-time jobs over the time I had already invested just keeping our community stable…that’s not your fault, but it’s part of the sacrifice on this side of it.

So, we carefully appointed a healthy combination of members who we knew could take over and keep it alive. For approximately 10 years, they kept this place going, took the load off of us unless issues evolved beyond their ability to handle. They are the superheroes here.

We have reached a point where a couple of major things have happened: 1) there are technical limitations in place with the state of forums and forum software that do not align with our ability to safely or easily maintain our information in a reasonable way. I cannot expand on this at the moment other than to say, we have to look another direction and maybe think outside the box; 2) our significant support system of moderators and administrators have all, at various times and for various reasons (respectfully, more than any of you realize) had to step away to handle their own personal lives and situations.

Health first, y’all!

If you’ve ever run a business, with employees, then perhaps you are familiar with this sort of dynamic.

Beyond these two points, there are other issues that play into my decision to close the forum section of our site at this moment in time.

With respect to what COULD come, it would be best for you to not throw any one person “under the bus” or blame anyone other than me for this decision. Period. No thread, or argument caused this. No disagreements. This is a necessary step to not lose almost 20 years of building something remarkable.

You’ve all provided great suggestions (and some emotional, terrible ones) about alternatives….to just keep it open until….to just do this until….

That is not possible right now otherwise I would. Even with an entire team in place, with what we have now systemically the problems won’t wash away. The good news is that some energy is in place to try to re-envision this entire thing. I won’t entertain the question of whether it needs re-envisioning. That is not up for debate.

None of the above addresses the mental and emotional investment needed to handle the community management.

Why are we “closing” now? What will Cymbalholic become? Who’s in charge here? Who will be in charge here? What does it matter now? What happens to the information? How can I get in touch with people? I don’t do social media, where do I go for information and cymbal talk?

These are questions that are likely going through your brain right now. I already know that, but cannot provide answers for them all as I do not know. I don’t know the exact outcomes of what the site AS A WHOLE will become one week/one year out. What I do know is how to take the first 2-3 steps toward trying to help future-proof this thing.

I’m tired of all those years of info and writings by our friends….just gone. All of Skiba’s writings, for example…no way to mention how much else. Old members know what I’m talking about. All of it.

There has to be a better way. But right now, I cannot take over the reins again (nor can Patrice) in the way that is necessary to patch what is left holding the metaphorical flooring together.

For some small bit of clarity…beyond this week:

- The forums will be left “on” as long as we can allow.

- The forums will be read-only!
- You need to resolve any marketplace transactions before Wednesday.

- Cymbalholic.com will not end here.
- Money does help, monetization may be a part of the future of the site, but it is not 100% of the issue right now.
- You will need to make creative use of other resources and space until we have some stability - I understand if each of you do not feel inclined to “return” at whatever point that can happen. We lost many regulars 9-10 years ago due to similar scenario.
- Continue to document your cymbals…weights, manufacturing characteristics, sound and video examples, etc. because I’m going to be calling on you to share this. We’re not done here. You will hear from me.

It would require a book-length writing to tell you what this place has meant to me and to Patrice; all the connections, the friendships (REAL!), the adventures, the industry experiences, the knowledge, things many of you will never know about….no way in the world could or would I have ever even been able to imagine any of this. I can’t walk away, but I cannot facilitate it all as-is, and with what stands now.

I just hope that I/we can re-organize this in a way that can make it happen, put the moving pieces in place that will allow for what is to come….and not have to sacrifice everything personally to make it happen. The line has to be drawn somewhere.

Says Chad:

"An even larger number of you know that as great as the forums/site/information is that is here currently, it is very much incomplete and nowhere near as expansive as it was during the peak usage years"(around 04-06).

...and that's when I was kicked off. "Less expensive" is a just nice way to say it's been downhill ever since.

....and followed by an excruciatingly slow death. But one could see rigor mortis setting in long before that.

Bill, I was wondering when you were going to bring that up. I did not want to say anything about that, but I assumed you would eventually chime in. And yes, I was very disappointed and missed your pithy comments, but the main reason I left was because the site was off line for quite some time and when it re-emerged after a redesign it didn't seem the same, and a lot if history was missing. After a few months I just started to taper off.

Time for something to replace it, but in the meantime the place is here.

But I must mention that I very much regret all the pains that I know I caused Chad and Patrice throughout my years of sometimes passionate defenses of unpopular stances like my anti-BIG Z tirades. Looking back now I now realize I would have done some of those things differently or not at all. And I still think very highly of Chad and Patrice. Chad is a stand-up and a stand out one of a kind type of righteous dude.

And I hope Zenstat's medical issues get resolved. I would like to see him continue in his research. He's enriched us greatly with the body of knowledge that he's contributed in addition to his work in statistical analysis that has added another dimension our understanding .
