Default Is my Supraphonic Alu or Brass?

hi guys and hello from Austria :-)

and hello to all the Ludwig supraphonic experts out there, i Need some help!

this my first Post here, and i know there have been similar threads about supra alu or brass, but at this time i am not really sure, because i had some 402īs in the last years, but this one is different.

i was always enjoying reading the Posts in this vintage drum Forum and i know there are Ludwig supraphonic experts in here, so i hope someone can help me out with my supraphonic, which could be a cob?, but to be honest i am not sure. iīve attached some photos so you can see the snare and hopefully give some Feedback.

so what i know is:

Ludwig supraphonic 6.5x14

no pitting (i think so) - as you can see on the photos

weight 4.4 kg including hoops and heads and everything, so it is heavier than any supra i owned

a small very light magnet (5 mm) sticks very slightly to the Shell, but does not snap hard like on steel, another magnet i own (1,5 cm and heavier) does not stick to the Shell, which is confusing me (magnet test) - the small magnet by the way sticks also very slightly to my tama brass starphonic in the same way

Serial number pointy b o badge (1980 or not, 70s?)

it does not Sound (to me) like an alu/ludalloy drum, but who knows ;-), i does not Sound exactly Sound like a bb which i also had, but is in the same ballroom und a bit drier than a bb (because of the weight?)

so did Ludwig make ludalloy Shells that were heavier?
as you can see on one photo, someone did scratch the Shell inside before the pretty Thing came in my house.

Well the Thing that confuses me most is the weight, that every 402 sounds a Little bit different to another is also clear.

thank you all for replys and best regards!
Rainer

Apparently, Ludwig engraved the letter "B" just above the tone control
to identify the shell as a brass shell, but i'm not sure they did that on all their brass
shells. Here's an old thread from this very forum explaining the whole
brass supra thing.. Hope this helps..

cheers,

hi rob thanks for your info!

well there is no b or br engraved, and the magnet does not stick to the Shell, but sticks to the hoops (steel?).

so it could be a Special order or an endorser snare?

a chromed black Beauty?

as i said itīs pretty heavy for an lm402.

best regards
Rainer

maybe the Chrome plating is very thick and thatīs why the drum is heavier? and thatīs the reason why there is no pitting?

does anyone have a supra 402 pointy badge that weighs 9.8 Pounds?

Hello fuerst73...and to the fourm!

I read all your posts. Certainly appears to be brass...or bronze. Hard to say. The shell weight of 6.4 pounds is really HEAVY! Is that with the lugs removed? As a comparison, I've weighed many of my shells. Each one had all hardware removed, including the lugs. Keep in mind that all my shells are 5x14, but will at least provide a good comparison.

1970 Supraphonic aluminum: 1 pound, 13 ounces
1980's Gretsch COB: 3 pounds 5.5 ounces
1960's Rogers Powertone COB: 2 pounds, 14 ounces

Thumbs up Re: Is my Supraphonic Alu or Brass?

hi mark and thank you!

the 6.4 is including the lugs, the strainer, and the muffler (i took off the heads and the hoops).

i have much respect for this drum, so i really donīt want to scratch on the Shell or someting to find out what it is.
removing the lugs would be ok if i then had a final result ;-).

have there been Chrome over bronze supraphonics?

to my ears it could be bronze also, because it is very woody, but also is Aluminium. for me itīs like in the middle of alu and brass, but i am no pro and i am not shure.

best regards and thx for alle the Infos
