Default '66 Ludwig Student Festival

Just purchased this 6.5 players drum. A '66 SCHOOL Festival. It has the original throw off and BB muffler. The hoops are not original. Serial number (331191) places it as a 1966.

As you can see it's a mahogany exterior. They offered these in a choice of pearl, lacquer or mahogany finishes. I'm trying to figure out what it was originally. I don't think it was a mahogany finish as it seems rough and you can plainly see the seam. Can't imagine Ludwig putting it out light that. I also don't think it was a lacquer as there's no evidence of any color anywhere. This leaves me thinking it was a pearl wrap that has been removed. Any insights would help. Thanks in advance.

That is a nice drum! I have one myself and love the tone. Mine is mahogany with the original finish. Yours looks like someone might have re finished it at some point. The wood looks to be mahogany but not really sure, it has a lot of dark lines in the grain as if it was glazed. Is there any signs of the badge being removed, what to the edges look like?

It looks like a drum you can wrap in any color you like.
I have a School festival (62) and it sounds great.
They look the same, What's the difference between the two?

Assuming this is a '66 drum (no badge tampering) then you may find evidence of a pearl wrap in the scarf joint.

The drum in question is a school festival not a student festival.

You're right vm2000. Thanks.
Edges are in great shape and no sign or the badge being messed with.
NO plans to rewrap this drum. If anything a light varnish.

Well I took this School Festival apart and have conclusive (I think) proof that this drum was originally wrapped. There is evidence of the badge having been removed or loosened and being glued back in position as you can see from the first pictures.

Also the lugs have been stuffed with foam which was common to do in the 80's and 90's. I don't believe that's stock. Both jobs look good as if done by a pro. The edges are intact and look great. it has the original butt plate and strainer.
I'm going to go ahead and refinish it with a darker stain to even out the splotches and use a clear lacquer, then play it.

Question. Is there any reason to repaint the interior in white.
Also did these 60's snares originally have brass hoops? It's my understanding the 50's WFL's had brass, and that it might improve the sound of this drum. If so where might I get new brass hoops for it?
Thanks in advance.

As far as the brass hoops, '66 was towards the end of the the brass hoop time frame. Many '65 drums have one steel and one brass.

Thanks Mike. This drum has none of the original hoops. Maybe I'll put brass on it. Should probably just break down and get something original. I had a beautiful 6.5 all original pre-serial Auditorium but foolishly sold it.
