1967 Rogers Holiday Kit - Hello from NY

Loading...

Hello! I wanted to introduce myself and say I'm glad to have found a forum for vintage drums online (found via Google)! Hope to find some good info here...

I'm from New York and I have a 1967 Rogers Holiday kit in Sparkle Green. I bought it in 1996 while I was in college and first started playing the drums (was a bass/guitar player before and was in various rock/punk bands) from someone on Usenet (yes, before the web or eBay or Craigslist...am I dating myself...?) sight unseen. I don't exactly know how much I paid for it; I think maybe $400-500? I wasn't even looking for a vintage set, just something cheap since it was my first kit and seemed better than buying a low-end new beginner's kit like a Pearl Forum or whatever at that time. I cleaned it up as best I could and haven't really "touched it" or cleaned it or restored it ever since. I'm also a car enthusiast and I've owned and fixed up many older cars and I'm of the thinking that old stuff is meant to look old and be used, not put on a pedestal and looked at... So I'm not going to do any museum-quality restoration work or anything like that on my drums, or my cars... :)

Somewhat regrettably (look back), I sold off all the vintage hardware (cymbal and snare drum stands, hi-hat stand, bass drum pedal) for really cheap (like $5-10 each) on eBay about 15 years ago, and replaced them with "modern" DW/Pearl/Gibraltar hardware. So it lost some of that vintage charm, but it was more playable while I was in a band and travelling from gigs and whatnot.

I really love the sound, tone, and volume of the kit. And the uniqueness, especially in my circle (rock/punk-- no one around me played a jazz drum kit at the time, hehe). Despite its small size, the sound is huge, resonates and projects very well. No modern kit rivals the tone and sound of this kit. It sounds great at full volume as it does at soft volume. Everyone says how much they are surprised by how "deep" and "dark" my set sounds. I matched my cymbals for this kind of tone so it's mostly "dark" cymbals such as Zildjian K. All modern cymbals, mostly purchased in late 90s early 2000... Also replaced all heads with modern heads, except for the resonant bass drum, still the original Rogers one, except I cut out a hole in it.

Condition-wise, it's not museum/collectible condition by any stretch of the imagination... The hardware (nuts, adjusters, hoops, and whatnot) have pitting on them and when I first got the kit, they were rusted and pitted and I did my best to polish them as best I could. The shells themselves have no damage, no cracks or chips.

I've always wanted to replace the snare drum with a wooden snare and/or something that doesn't rattle so much (nightmare to record). But I never got around to it and now these days I hardly play or record any more... But recently I'm wanting to go back to making music again, so that's why I'm getting interested yet again on my drum kit and finding out more about it. I recall that I couldn't quite figure out exactly what my snare drum was. It says "PowerTone" on it, I think it's the low-end range (not Dynasonic)and I'm not sure if it was originally part of the drum kit or separate... If anyone has more insight, that would be great!

Beauty. Is that a self-adhesive sticker on one of those toms? Oh the horror!

FYI - Powertone snare are definitely not the low end range. The shells are almost identical composition to the Dynas. Both are Chrome Over Brass. Dyna is 10 lug, Powertone is 8 lug. Lugs are the same and throwoff is identical as well except the notch on the Dyna arm cam.

Or should I say, Yeah, that Powertone is not worth much. I'll give you $50 shipped for it.....Eye Ball

nice kit,the wrap looks good in the pics.

You can look at the tags inside the shells to get close to the year,if 1967/68 your tags should read dayton. From your pics it is hard to tell inside finish, dayton era they could be flat grey,or speckled or both.

Not to be nitpicky but your bass looks like a 14x20,you measuer the depth of the shell without the bass drum hoops.Your ft is probably 16x16.

Like another poster said, the powertone was not a cheap or low line drum.I think they bring 250ish these days.

I myself have a 1967 too,and I like playing my late 90,s K crahes and ride with them, they do seem to match up nicely, don't they?

Green glass...you lucky dog. You would be looking at big bucks to get a matching PT for that kit but like the other guys said COB PT is an excellent drum .

Welcome fellow New Yorker!

Beautiful kit indeed. I have had a yen for green sparkle drums since day 1.

Hanging around here you will surely start to re-appreciate what you have.

That rattling of the snare drum can be easily remedied, if it's the tone control or lug springs.
