Nice drum for an attractive price.
The hoops, 4 point butt, paper tag and, most importantly, the drum key holder which was not introduced until the early 60s, all confirm it as a 6 ply.

But where are the plys? A possible 4 are visible...horizontal/vertical/horizontal/vertical....very thin drum, maybe 6mm. Look at the pics and please tell me where the 6 plys are...it was even hard to discern the 4 because of the silver sealer.

Looks like going out to in: Maple, Gum, Maple, Gum, Gum, Maple. Gum tears out easily.....

That's a really nice snare. Zoom in on your last picture of the shell. Two of the plys are covered by the silver sealer (aka = metal fence post paint). If you work from the outside in, the plys go wrap, thin ply, thick ply, thin ply, thick ply, painted thin ply, painted thick ply. You would know if it was a 3-ply, because the ply joints would have a light/dark/light look and obvious overlap at the seam.

3-ply or 6-ply, it matters not, because it's still a very nice drum.

I believe you, because it is also what I read here http://http://www.gretschdrums.com/?fa=historybadges, but I swear we still can't see it, LOL! My husband is the drummer, I am the guitarist/pianist, but I bought him 30 snare drums in 2007 as a gift...they were all from collectors...so layers I have seen. This is mystifying...and it is making us cross-eyed...:-) It is an awesome sounding drum...but we are moving to Germany, and pretty much everything we own has to go.

Yes...the nicest was a Ludwig Opal snare drum. How I loved that one....

All I have left is this drum, and a Premier 6 lug birch snare drum with an oval badge from the 60's.
