Vistalite Restoration Last viewed: 1 hour ago

A before and after shot of a tequila sunrise kit I recently restored, sizes are 14/15/18/24. I bought them not knowing the pattern. I was hoping for some rare combination, but was just as glad they were tequila's, as the seller didn't pack them very well, and the 14" and 18" sustained cracks. (I got some of my money back) They had been painted inside and out, and unfortunately for me whoever painted them did a very good job.

Wow! Great job!

You're going to need a barstool to play those. A 15" mounted on a 24" BD.Yes Sir

Wow... what did you use to polish those up... I have had a Vistalite kit sitting on the shelf for a few years and your post is pretty darn inspirational. Beautiful and amazing work!

To get the paint off I used a product by Dumond called SmartStrip. It loosened up the paint so it would wipe off, but didn't eat into the acrylic. I had to leave it on for 24 hours in order for it to work. Then I started with wet sandpaper, sometimes starting with 400 grit, then working up to 800, then 1500, and finished with 2500. I then used Novus 3, 2, and 1 polish.

It was a very labor intensive project, there's no way I could recoup my costs if I consider all the time it took. Just a labor of love, wanting to get these back to their original beauty (apart from the cracks of course).

I have seen some amazing projects over the years that I have been on this forum but I got to say.... Your work on this kit is certainly among the most amazing I can remember.

You think I can sand this abrasion off this drum going 400, 800, 1200, 2500 and get it looking clear?

I've been able to remove some pretty deep scratches with the sandpaper. You need to be very careful not to make flat spots, so you would need to sand the un-scratched area in all directions around it too. Another method I have used is scraping the scratch with a box cutter blade. You're basically shaving part of the shell away. This is sometimes quicker than sanding, although you do still end up doing some sanding, but with the higher grits. And again, you need to be careful not to make flat spots.

For the areas you just want to make shiny again the Novus works great. Just be sure to only use micro fiber cloths.

Nice work bringing those beasts back to life ! ;) I would get some Ludwig Atlas mounts and floor tom legs to mount on that 15" and make it a grounded floor tom . Would make the set up unique and you'd "almost" have a classic configuration !
