Re: 13" snare to rack tom project

Here is the 4 piece kit. The snare is from Elkhart, the bass drum is a Pioneer both from the 1930’s. The floor tom says Chicago and has an April 41 date inside so it probably came from Elkhart as...

Re: CitriStrip fail-learn from Dean

I feel your pain. I used citristripe on a 15 inch maple marching snare and had the same experience. Fortunately, it did not have a wrap on it and I was able to sand it to get the paint off.

Re: 13" snare to rack tom project

Thanks Guys,
I’ll post some photos of the complete 4 piece kit on Tuesday. Here are a couple of photos showing the 15 in maple floor tom. I sure wish it was mahogany.

Re: 13" snare to rack tom project

Final sanding and fourth and final coat of poly. I’ll touch up around the patch with some putty.

Re: Nickel over brass-polishing recipe?

The part of the bracket that clamps onto the hoop is magnetic so I assume nickel on steel. The rest of the bracket is not magnetic so I assume nickel on brass. I’m going to give Dawn a try to remove...

Re: 13" snare to rack tom project

I think this is as close as I can get to the darkness on the patch. I certainly prefer to work with solid wood and not veneer. The veneer on this drum is paper thin and so is the patch.

Re: Tension rods, cleaning, rust, soaking

What is the magic of dawn versus other dish soap?

Re: 13" snare to rack tom project

Well, I think things are looking better. I may need some more stain just on the patch and then some rubbing to blend it in and a little bit of putty to smooth it out.

Re: 13" snare to rack tom project

I took the slippery slope and cut out enough of the existing veneer and poplar so that the veneer patch would lay flat on the surface to minimize the need for sanding. It’s going to take some work to...

Re: 13" snare to rack tom project

Here’s a photo after a second coat of stain and rubbing it in. I’ll have to try some putty to even out the color. I thought about cutting out some more area and installing additional veneer but I...

Re: 13" snare to rack tom project

Here’s the first coat of stain in the patched area. I’m using Minwax Red Mahogany stain.
