Re: Slingerland ??

+1 with Mark. Mid 1970 with that transition badge. What are the serial numbers? Appears to be a 22" BD with two mounted toms. Is there a matching FT? The FT in the picture looks to be COW.

Re: 1930s Slingerland snare with four point strainer?

The "Sure Grip" strainer was used on mid and low level drums such as the "Universal" and "Juveniles". The next question is why is that strainer on a drum with eight lugs? Which badge does the drum...

Re: Removing old paint from wooden hoops...

Stripper can be used without damaging the wood. Use coarse copper wool to remove loosened paint rather than a scraper to avoid gouging. I prefer a water soluble stripper also. Wear a mask, gloves...

Re: Removing old paint from wooden hoops...

Mid seventies. At the time he seemed like a "really" old man to me but mid seventies doesn't seem "really" old now. An old timer from the "no mask" days. Effects are cumulative and usually take...

Re: Removing old paint from wooden hoops...

All valid points longjohn. I knew a professional wood worker who would only "sand". He did beautiful work. He is no longer with us due to lead poisoning. I guess it comes down to what is more...

Re: Removing old paint from wooden hoops...

+1 with seantdrums, chemical stripper or heat gun. Lead should not be ingested or inhaled. Sanding lead paint creates airborne particles and should be avoided. Stripper will be faster and safer.

Re: Were Slingerland stick-savers undersized?

Your problem seems to be following those hoops. Are you sure they are genuine Slingerland hoops and not MIJ clones?

Re: Gauging interest: Slingerland Lites kit

Nice looking kit, but why is there so much "splay" on the snare tension rods? Is that just a photographic illusion?

Re: Vintage Slingerland Snare Drum help needed to restore

Certainly, why not? Just a word of caution: Some claim that copper on steel wrap can be very difficult to remove cleanly. Good luck.

Re: Vintage Slingerland Snare Drum help needed to restore

I agree with Mark that this is an Artist #153 model snare. It looks like it was originally copper over wood (COW) as NoBass noted. The copper wrap was actually a copper coated steel hence the rust...

Re: Rogers Supreme pedal question

A roll pin in a blind hole is tough. You may be able to twist it out with a small "screw extractor".

Re: 3 Reinforcement Ring Bass Drum?

Early Slingerland Radio Kings often have three re-rings, however they would not have the lugs pictured on this BD. Those are the '55 and up "Sound King" lugs. Lots of MIJ kits used a clone of that...

Re: Sonor Teardrop Floor Tom?

Based on stated measurements the drum is 1/4" out of round. Possibly not too much on a 16" diameter. Head fit will determine play-ability if shell is otherwise sound.

Re: Tell Me About Shelbyville Slingerlands

Looks like a nice set. Looking forward to more pictures. Do the toms have badges? Have you checked for date stamps inside the shells? Any info greatly appreciated.

Re: Slingerland Phantom

Late '72 - '75 according to Dr CJ Wenk. Your serials suggest the earlier end of that time frame. Seems too early for the Super Set-O-Matic tom mount. Did you add that? It most certainly works...

Re: Slingerland Vent Badge Location on Snare?

According to Dr CJ Wenk the badge was placed to the right of the throw-off late '60- early '61. On these drums the tone control is in the panel 180 degrees opposite the badge. The more common...

Re: Help with Slingerland Champagne Sparkle

Nicely clustered. "Born together". Probably Krupa 1N as Mark stated.

Re: Help with Slingerland Champagne Sparkle

Tension rods and claws on BD are not original. Pretty easy fix. BD hoops are '74-up with chrome inlay. '68-'69 +/- for that serial number. Are the other serials close? Set-o-matic should be...

Re: 1941 Swing Sensation "Top Hat and Cane" Original

OK, modified original. From a purists point of view no longer original.

Re: 1941 Swing Sensation "Top Hat and Cane" Original

Fantastic kit. If Dick Vandenburg is not the original owner and his initials are on the BD head then how can that head be original?
