Re: Different Gretsch round badge models?

Gretsch made just one kind of drum (using shells they subcontracted from Jasper) in various sizes. Like Ludwig the outfit names are just that, marketing names for various combinations of those drums....

Re: Ludwig black beauty 79 / 80 advice

Looks legit to me, as much as I can tell from the photos.

Re: Correct width and finish for Keystone Ludwig Bass Hoops

Hoops were originally painted in lacquer. They did not polish the finish which resulted in a satin look. I still use spray can lacquer when redoing hoops. You can still find real lacquer in spray...

Re: Ludwig Standard

That's a cool standard set in the most desirable sizes. The new spurs are a bit of a bummer from the collectible standpoint but no doubt an improvement as far as real world gigging. The tom holder...

Re: Old Ludwig’s

"Hollywood" was just the name for a particular combination of Ludwig drums. The drums were all the same regardless of what outfit they happened to come with and you were free to make up your own...

Re: Is Anyone Still Using This Forum?

Still look at it once a day. I'll post if I see something worth commenting on. I don't start many threads here, mostly just respond to other people's questions when I think I can help.

Re: Vintage Ludiwg lugs mix andmatch??? nickel

I'd have to agree with Bun. Maybe put together by mistake (brand new nickel isn't that far off from chrome in appearance ) but otherwise unlikely. Always possible that a music store put them together...

Re: Ludwig Standards with Resocoat and date stamps?

Appears to be Bronze Strata, which is one of the harder Strata finishes to find.

Re: Ludwig Standards with Resocoat and date stamps?

Early Standards had white resocoat interiors. At least the first few months of production.

Re: Rogers "Butterfly" Wing screw sizes?

Any of those should be available at any full line hardware store so you could buy a short bolt in each of those sizes (for very little $) and then use those to determine which is the size you need.

Re: Rogers "Butterfly" Wing screw sizes?

Almost certainly 1/4-20 thread. I know some of my Rogers stands use a bigger thread which I believe is 5/16-24 (might be 5/16ths-18). The next size up is 3/8th-16 or 24. It pretty much has to be one...

Re: Playing (preying) on the nostalgia factor........

I think what happened in this case was Ludwig saw that Gary Astridge was able to sell his Ringo snare copies for $15,000 apiece. Other than the throw off and not being signed on the interior by Ringo...

Re: Help Identifying this Ludwig

Just a theory of course but the switching back and forth between clear and granitone interiors may have been based on the grade of wood Ludwig had available at a given time. Nice looking maple would...

Re: Help Identifying this Ludwig

During the 3 ply era Ludwig only made one type of drum shell that was used for everything. It doesn't matter if you call them "classics" or "Super Classics" they were all the same (or at least...

Re: Is Steve Maxwell still making reproduction parts?

I bought a Slingerland leg bracket in person at the Illinois store right before this Covid mess descended upon us. I asked about the rail mounts and was told they were no longer available. Poking...

Re: Ludwig Classic Lugs-Different Sizes on Toms?

There's the big and small classic lugs that both originated in the WFL years and then the mini lugs version that (I think) first popped up in the 1990s on some of the lower tier lines. That teeny...

Re: Ludwig Classic Lugs-Different Sizes on Toms?

I guess I'm too used to the way most vintage sets look because those large lugs look odd to me on a 12". Too big for the drum. Maybe on a power tom that diameter but on an 8" deep drum they look to...

Re: Ludwig Classic Lugs-Different Sizes on Toms?

Ludwig toms, 12" and under, used the smaller lugs for at least 30 years (early 1950s to early 1980s) so that is definitely the "normal" setup on a vintage set. The small lugs also appeared on all...

Re: Ludwig Pioneer vs. Ludwig Jazz Fest

A mod orange Pioneer popped up on ebay probably 15-18 years ago. It started at a dollar by folks with no idea what is was other than an old drum they found. Sold for $1200. Oyster Black Pioneers can...

Re: Ludwig Pioneer vs. Ludwig Jazz Fest

A drum shell off the stack in the factory had equal potential to become either a Pioneer or a Jazz Festival right up to the moment the worker put it on the drilling jig. Then it assumed its new...

Re: Dating Ludwig 401

Mr. Carlos is much more in tune with this upper echelon market than I am so I'd say his estimate is going to be more accurate. I tend to be conservative when it comes to pricing estimates, probably...

Re: Dating Ludwig 401

Well, unless my eyes and computer monitor are deceiving me, that appears to be a lacquered brass shell from sometime around 1961-early 1963 (pre serial # keystone badge). If it's all original it's...
