Re: VDF Demographic (Age) Poll

I'll be 43 in November. I was kind of a late bloomer: I didn't really start learning how to play until I was 21.

I'm pretty much self taught. I am a 4/4 surf beat drummer at heart; I'm not a...

Re: Leedy vs. WFL

My experience has been the opposite... I have a set of '56 WFL's, and I found them to be more warm and full-sounding than my old set of Leedys (which I think were somewhere between '61-'63).

Re: Putting Bonham inspired set up for sale

Steve -

Nice kit!

The fact that the badges are not consecutive does not mean the pieces of the kit didn't leave the factory together. While this may apply to several drum companies, it...

Re: The Blue Book of Drums

As someone posted above.. Forget about using resellers (i.e. Steve Maxwell's is the last place I'd use as a guide to prices).

Don't get me wrong: Steve is a great guy and his shops are awesome....

Re: Arai kit

Yep, I recognize the badge. That's a stencil kit from Japan. Chances are the shells were made from luan. If you pull one of the heads off and see a vertical wood grain, you can verify that.

With a...

Re: Arai kit

A pic of the badge would help prove this... Arai was a MIJ stencil brand.

Re: How do YOU get your perfect Bass drum sound?

It depends on the kick.

I have 5 kits, all of them Ludwig (well, one of them is a WFL). All of them have 14x22 kicks.

My Vistalite gets an Aquarian SKII batter and a Remo clear Ambassador reso...

Re: Ludwig Ludwig kit 3 piece WMP late 40's

Is it just the photos, or has the WMP on the bass yellowed more than the toms?

I've owned at least one set of Vistalites for the past 20 years. My $.02...

Any kind of head with a "dot" on it totally kills the tone. That, and it deadens the action off the head, which makes...

Re: just got 40s Gretsch set, tell me what you see

One thing of note...

There was a Gretsch kit for sale within the last couple of years that had a wrap that was never in any catalog (it looked a table top from a 1950's diner table). I think the...

Re: just got 40s Gretsch set, tell me what you see

Yes. A friend of mine has 2 full sheets of NOS Leedy Fiesta wrap. His dad worked in the vinyl business for 30 years and somehow managed to get a hold of it.

Re: Disapointed, Garage sale update

You pretty much hit the jackpot. Your kit is original, and is worth maybe 20 to 25 times what you paid for it if all the pieces left the factory as a kit (I say that because one piece has yellowed...

Re: 1970s Slingerland "Denim" covering...

My dad was a retired Levi's executive. I have some contacts there, and have often thought about asking them if they could cut me up enough material to cover a 13/16/22 Ludwig B/O kit.

Re: Vintage LM402

These are not 402's, but for the record... I own 3 400's: a KB from '68, a B/O from '74-'75, and a Monroe badge from 2004.

They are all different weights. I don't have the exact weights handy...

Re: Stand organizer?

I've owned 30+ vintage kits over the past 21 years, and most of them came with old hardware. My hardware to kit ratio must be 3:1 at least.

I used to sell it on eBay, but a good chunk of vintage...

Re: Vinnie going to Ludwig

I have never, and will never, understand people's obsession with who is endorsing what company. If you buy x cymbal or x drum set just because Player X is, you are a sucker, IMO. And you can play the...

Re: Green Vistalite Snare

Vistalite prices have taken a nose dive as of late. After a big spike in interest after the reissues were released in 2000-2001, the buzz over the vintage stuff was killed along with the economy.
