I know the plastic black was used as a laminated top on a Duo-Jet guitar in the fifties. The other four top types were sprayed black.

They did high end as well. I had no idea at the time that the lugs were plastic. Found a Swinger shell with the lugs still on, so it's back with no cracks.

Thanks for this information. It has shed some light on my 4160, which seems to be a transitional no knurling / Lightning strainer version.

KCDD...#55695...would this be the lowest Lightning 4160...

I think the name is owned by Dixon now. They have been making a move into the higher end. Here's hoping they at least attach a high quality drum to the name.

I've had two teardrop kits. The current one is a mid 60's Chicago K-190. The previous one was unusual in that they were teardrops with Phonic shells.
I can't remember how that kick sounded...DOH ...

I nominate Black Shadow Resonators for one of those top two positions.

Resonators were among the most expensive drums of their time. Not sure what the premium was for the Black Shadow option.
