Re: Restoring vintage drum shells

Whichever shells you pick out, check them carefully. Old 3 ply shells that have been sitting a long time with no heads or hoops tend to fall out of round. Maybe take some heads with you when you...

Re: Salvaging a calf head for display

Thanks! As far as orchestra No. 1, can't really say. The current day marching band in Chatham was contacted but their records going back that far have been lost. Having the story would be a cool...

Re: cost of custom Remo heads ??

Hey GlenB;
I have ordered custom sized Remo heads in the past through a local shop back around 2010. My understanding of the situation is that Remo will make custom sizes for the price of the...

Salvaging a calf head for display

Probably the most extreme repair I have made on a calf head. This head was TRASHED but I think that it really added a lot to the drum to be able to display it with the original head.
No rocket...

Re: Restoring late 30s Leedy kit

Both painting and re-wrapping will detract from the value. How much depends on the quality of the restoration. The closer you can keep it to original the better, resale wise, but once the original...

Re: Question regarding re-wrapping and old glue

I don't know for sure what type of glue Sonor was using back then. If it is indeed contact cement, jc nailed it with lacquer thinner and scraping. It sucks but it's about the only thing that works....

Re: Heads for over-sized Ajax Drums

Remo still makes them as a stock head, no special order needed. Same price as regular heads. Ambassador stock #s are BA-0112-PR and BA-0116-PR. Other heads are available, usually just the regular...

Re: Wood stock drum company...can anyone help?

Re: black interiors

8upwithit;
Welcome to the discussion!
Sonor to this day still produces their shells using their "Cross Laminated Tension Free" system. Once you remove the marketing wank, it is basically the...

Re: black interiors

Hey Peedy;
Yes, I took it as you meant that the grain direction of the plies ran diagonal. (I still can't figure out what you meant by "parallel diagonal"...) I was just trying to explain to you...

Re: black interiors

Hey Peedy;
Once again, I am just looking for some info on the "grain aligned" shells where all the plies run parallel.
You are misunderstanding what is going on in the Sonor video. The...

Re: black interiors

Hey Peedy;
Thanks for the link. I've seen this video before, it has been kicking around for some time. At 0:20 it talks about the ply lay up and how they are arranged at opposing angles. What I...

Re: Pearl silver logo script kit w/ beech shells

Thanks for jumping in guys. Both those kits look birch to me too. However, these are 100% beech, no question. I have seen horizontal grain on MIJs, and the aussie is right, most of the wood used...
