Re: Slingerland Drum research, help!

Serial numbers only give a rough indication of when the drums were made. There is a chart elsewhere on this very site that can help you find that year. Click on the Slingerland Drums link at the top...

Did you buy an 18" bass drum in mottled gray?

Re: WTF............Ludwig 1124 Hi Hats

The two available lengths were 17" and 23", at least in this early 70's parts catalog.

I wonder if it is just pure coincidence that those are the same length options for floor tom legs?

Re: WTF............Ludwig 1124 Hi Hats

Hmmmm, looking closer at the tiny picture it does look like those could be 1123-1 hi-hat stands which are different from the Atlas Big Beat 1124 model. However he mentioned that they have the...

Re: What would make this kit worth $4000???

Well if they are 12/16/20 (that is if the set actually exists) then they are worth even less than, at most, half of what he's asking since the 14x14 in the picture represented a sizeable portion of...

Re: WTF............Ludwig 1124 Hi Hats

They did make a taller version. It's not in the regular catalog but in the parts catalog there is a longer top tube and top rod available. I guess you bought the regular 1124 (my favorite hi-hat...

Re: Price check 1966 ludwig black oyster snare

Sold for $418. Probably a sweet deal for someone reasonably local. I threw in a bid for $300 figuring if through some stroke of luck I ended up as high bidder I could almost justify the trip north....

Re: Price check 1966 ludwig black oyster snare

And don't forget that they are "mottled gray"...a desirable finish.

The spacing of the claws around the hoop on the bass drum makes me think 18" too. 14x18 not 12x18 though.

I see you have 14...

Re: Price check 1966 ludwig black oyster snare

I could almost justify the drive to the Minneapolis area for those Goodwill drums if I weren't stuck in the area for the weekend by work...and if I didn't already have too many drums.

I wonder...

Re: What would make this kit worth $4000???

It is a nice looking Downbeat set but not worth more than half that asking price. I'm guessing he really doesn't want to sell them.

Re: Ludwigs in black paint?

The badge on Jazz Festivals moved from being on the panel adjacent to the throw off sometime in late 1963 early 1964. Ringo's April '63 snare has the badge next to the throw but his subsequent one...

Re: Ludwigs in black paint?

It's buried in the fine print but you could get any color lacquer you wanted sprayed on your shells, you just had to provide a sample and presumably Ludwig would take it to the paint store and get a...

Re: red drums in the attic.......

Like Hobbs mentioned, at least you were able to verify that they were nothing to worry about. I hate when you hear about some drums with a vague description but then they are gone before you can get...

Re: red drums in the attic.......

Always worth checking out but it seems the more hoops you have to jump through, or the longer you have to wait to check out a lead, the less likely that there will be gold at the end.

You used to...

Re: Price check 1966 ludwig black oyster snare

I believe the new owner is quite happy with his acquisition. He posted a picture over at DFO of the snare and his matching ( and now complete ) OBP set.

Re: NYT Zildjian Article ...

Interesting read.

Sabian has the same 400 year history but is legally prevented from advertising that.

I thought 1623 was the starting year, not 1618. That's what they used to say in the ads.

Re: Rogers or Not

I have a snare that looks much like that, Rogers. Bought it at an antique store for $25 because I felt sorry for it. Every lug was broken into several pieces. I believe mine does have a badge on it...

Re: Price check 1966 ludwig black oyster snare

That was a really good price for one of those.

Yes it is way too much for a Pioneer, but it isn't too much for a matching snare that finishes off a prized drum set when the other vintage...

Re: Ludwig 1400 Cymbal Stand Tilters...5/16" instead of 3/8"?

Hard to say, I haven't torn apart every 1400 I've owned or come in contact with so I guess I can only truly speak to the design of my original 1400 model stands which were from around 1973. Also the...

Re: Ludwig 1400 Cymbal Stand Tilters...5/16" instead of 3/8"?

The top end of the upper solid rod for a Ludwig 1400 stand is turned down to a smaller diameter and sort of splined as well. The connection is just a friction fit. You can pop the tilter off a 1400...

Re: Price check 1966 ludwig black oyster snare

Oyster black Pioneer, the poor man's "Ringo" snare. Probably about a thousand dollar drum these days but there are two on ebay right now that folks are asking twice that for so maybe I'm behind the...

Re: Drum Companies and Their Worst Ideas

Yeah I almost missed out on them because I didn't like the look. I thought that that was a super price on a set but didn't want drums that looked like that. Then someone posted on the DFO that you...

Re: Rough value for Gretsch Drop G concert toms

Probably one of those two. Rosewood is actually red with not much (no) brown to it. I'd say 80% walnut, 20% Rosewood. These stains can vary quite a bit in shade as they were applied by hand.

My...
