Re: Help to identify vintage Pearl 5 kit set

Hello, I had one of the early Exports in the UK back in around 1982, bought it from Kingfisher Music in Fleet, Hants. Mine had simple "Pearl" badges but were shallower toms, and my BD definitely...

Re: Premier Club Made in England

Hi Shrubby, lovely finish on those drums, I do like Premier and being British of course have seen my share of it. As far as I recall, Premier Club drums were previously the Super Olympic range (or...

Re: Restoring/Cleaning of a '79/'83 Tama Imperialstar

NOooooo! Please don't use wire wool on this lovely snare! Try silver foil; scrunch it into a ball and wet it; then rub it over the affected areas - it usually works wonders and because it's softer...

Re: Floor tom Find..

They are great drums, I had a kit in White which had the same interior wood, I think it is called Agethis. Great find, now go out and see if you can find the rest of the kit :) Best, Doug

Re: 1984 yamaha stage-satiny red wrap

Hi Smarcha! Love those kits, I have a slightly later 5000 series kit but I always loved that finish. The 1981 catalog actually calls it "Silky Red" rather than "Satiny Red" but perhaps that was a...

Re: Should I buy this Tama superstar?

Superstars are very nice drums; it looks "ok" but it's pretty knocked about (see the chrome in those pics). Even if the shells have been refinished, personally I wouldn't pay EUR 350, I would say...

Re: Best heads for concert toms and tuning tips!

As an alternative suggestion, might I suggest also Evans Hydraulics? They will give you a BIG 70s/80s recording type sound. May not project as well live though! Doug

Re: Best heads for concert toms and tuning tips!

I would put Remo CS (Controlled Sound) black dots on those :p
Personally I would also keep the tuning fairly low, but that is just a preference. I guess it depends on what you're tuning for? ...

Re: Premier 'Club' Series ('79-'81)

I had a lovely Premier Club series a few years back, in Polychromatic Gold. It was a concert tom variety, the BD had batter and reso heads but the 12, 13 and 16 (traditional depths) were single...

Re: Tama guys how do you feel about late 70's Imperialstars?

I owned a set, but from 1983 when the re-rings had disappeared. Midnight blue, Copeland clone. They were extremely loud and punchy but in my opinion not overly "musical" !! Doug

Re: Pearl Vintage No-Name Drums

I think it's an early/transitional Export from around 81/82. If you take off one of the tom holders you'll get a better idea of the shell material. I suspect you'll find it's ply (luan), and the...

Re: Hoshino 10 Lug 22" Bass Drum & 16" Floor Tom

Hi Mike, I recently had a whole Hoshino kit, same era same colour. I paid 90 for it. The matching toms are quite unusual in that both the 12 and 13 each have 8 lugs to and bottom! Which is a lot...

Re: What kit is this and should I buy it?

Personally I would use coated Emperors on that kit (toms) and probably something like a PS3 on the bass. Just my taste though! Emperors are much easier to tune than Ambassadors and (in my opinon)...

Re: What kit is this and should I buy it?

It looks to me like a 1969 Thunder King in Blue Grain Pearl finish.

See this catalog: http://www.drumarchive.com/Pearl/Pearl1969.pdf

$150 sounds reasonable to me - but probably no higher!
