well since in the days of dial up..on the net...from long time Gretsch specialist "3 Ply Guy".... He's apparently selling off in my opinion one if not thee greatest Little Gretsch set I ever laid...

Yes. There's been no pinpointable evidence to the contrary. Now the large lug on a small tom! Oy Vey! What a sight...but far less common; but I've seen two in the past year...

mahogany or Birch are your choices ( the rings were beech)

I'd leave it alone

they returned to Birch in 1976.
with those leg brackets 1976 and Birch makes sense.
If it's tone is good leave...

2 or 3 years after these with the earlier spur and not the big T handle you have on your leg mounts.....

Using the date they were bought new. Sometimes the set could have been in the store for 2-3 years before purchased. being this is a 6 ply and 3 ply mix makes it a little dear difficult to pin down...

you mean, "why closer to the head".......the Low-Profile die cast hoop on the 2000? or both? I don't think there ever a reason given; maybe to save metal/ use the least metal/ cost..

none but If I had that drumset I would tune it up (that 12...) and play it how it sounds and possibly over time would be able to manipulate it's tone by 'me'. By what you throw at it. Your hands....
