Ludwig Pioneer Snare Drum

I picked up this silver sparkle Ludwig Pioneer snare last week and finally got a chance to use it with the kit. They are great sounding drums.

I took my Pioneer apart last week to install the muffler I bought a while back. After putting it back together and tuning it up I was pleasantly surprised at how nice it sounds. Didn't even replace the batter head. I have been putting Aquarian Studio X heads on everything recently but that old Coated Ambassador sounds really good muffled a little or wide open.

I am a huge fan of the Pioneer snare (most of mine are the mid 60's 5.5" depth design) and I have been playing them for years.
I also use the Coated Ambassador heads and like the sound of them. Some of mine had the Vintage Ludwig 20 strand 14" snare wires (the ones with the plastic ends) that I took off and use the 14" Puresound wires which I prefer. A lot of people say the drum cant be tuned really well due to the 6-lug design but with a bit of work I can still get a nice bright response and have not had any issues.

I love Pioneer snares, I have absolutely no problem getting them to sound good. The same goes for Slingerland six luggers, I had one that I used as my gigging snare and it never let me down. I recall one gig where the venue had a soundman and he loved the drum, it took him all of ten seconds to dial it in the mix.

Another Pioneer fan here as well. Easy tuning. I actually feel that they have a larger tuning range than the 8 lug Jazz Festival or Super Classic.

I believe you're right, I was thinking about a Super Classic I had and how my Pioneer sounds better. It could be that having fewer lugs let's the shell resonate more. I'm sure when Ludwig came out with these drums, they weren't thinking more resonance, but having fewer lugs they could make them less expensive. Whatever the case, it turned out well for us poor folk.Cool1
